Sarum Mass

return to Liturgics

The following version of the Sarum Mass is found on the site of Fr. Anthony Chadwick, a traditionalist Roman Catholic turned Anglican priest. It is presented here, in its entirety, without any kind of Latinist's comment or liturgist's critique.

THE ORDER OF MASS ACCORDING TO THE USE OF SARUM

The priest pours water into the Chalice containing wine, saying:

From this be blessing upon us, for from his side came forth blood and water. In the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

While the priest vests, he shall say the hymn:

Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest,

Vouchsafe within our souls to rest;

Come with thy grace and heavenly aid,

And fill the hearts which thou hast made.

To thee, the Comforter, we cry;

To thee, the gift of God most high;

The fount of life, the fire of love,

The soul's anointing from above.

The sevenfold gifts of grace are thine,

O finger of the hand divine;

True Promise of the Father thou,

Who dost the tongue with speech endow.

Thy light to every sense impart,

And shed thy love in every heart;

Thine own unfailing might supply

To strengthen our infirmity.

Drive for away our ghostly foe,

And thine abiding peace bestow;

If thou be our preventing guide,

No evil can our steps betide.

Make thou to us the Father known,

Teach us the eternal Son to own,

Be this our never-changing creed,

That thou dost from them both proceed.

To thee who, dead, again dost live,

All glory, Lord, thy people give;

Whom with the Father we adore

And Holy Ghost for evermore. Amen.

After vesting, the priest says these preparation prayers before entering the church.

V. Send forth thy Spirit and they shall be created.

R. And thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name; Through our Lord Jesus Christ thy Son, who with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, liveth and reigneth God, world without end. Amen.

I will go unto the altar of God, even unto the God of my joy and gladness.

Give sentence with me, O God, and defend my cause against the ungodly people: O deliver me from the deceitful and wicked man.

For thou art the God of my strength, why hast thou put me from thee: and why go I so heavily, while the enemy oppresseth me?

O send out thy light and thy truth, that they may lead me: and bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy dwelling.

And that I may go unto the altar of God, even unto the God of my joy and gladness: and upon the harp will I give thanks unto thee, O God, my God.

Why art thou so heavy, O my soul: and why art thou so disquieted within me?

O put thy trust in God: for I will yet give him thanks, which is the help of my countenance, and my God.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

I will go unto the altar of God, even unto the God of my joy and gladness.

Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison.

Our Father. Hail Mary.

At the foot of the altar, the priest and server say:

V. And lead us not into temptation.

R. But deliver us from evil.

V. O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good.

R. For his mercy endureth for ever.

I confess to God, to blessed Mary, to all the Saints, and to you, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed, by my own fault. I beg holy Mary, all the Saints of God, and you, to pray for me.

C. May God almighty have mercy upon you, and forgive you your sins; deliver you from all evil, preserve and confirm you in goodness, and bring you to eternal life.

S. Amen.

C. I confess to God, to blessed Mary, to all the Saints, and to you, Father, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed, by my own fault. I beg holy Mary, all the Saints of God, and you, Father, to pray for me.

S. May God almighty have mercy upon you, and forgive you your sins; deliver you from all evil, preserve and confirm you in goodness, and bring you to eternal life.

R. Amen.

S. May the almighty and merciful God grant you absolution and remission of your sins, time for true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and comfort of the Holy Ghost.

C. Amen.

V. Our help is in the name of the Lord.

R. Who hath made heaven and earth.

V. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

R. From this time forth, now, and for evermore.

Let us pray.

Receive the kiss of peace and love, that you may be fit for the holy altar, to celebrate the holy office.

Let us pray. Take away from us, O Lord, all our iniquities, that we may be found worthy to enter the holy of holies with pure minds; Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

The Introit or Office is said here:

Kyrie eleison (iij)

Christe eleison (iij)

Kyrie eleison (iij)

Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

V. The Lord be with you.

R. And with thy spirit.

The Collect is read here, preceded by Let us pray.

This is followed by the Epistle, Gradual and Alleluia (or tract) and Sequence.

Jube, Domine, benedicere.

The Lord be in my heart and in my mouth to proclaim the holy Gospel of God; in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

The solemn procession of the Gospel book is made, and the priest or deacon proceeds:

V. The Lord be with you.

R. And with thy spirit.

The reading of the Holy Gospel according to N.

R. Glory be to thee, O Lord... Praise be to thee O Christ

S. By the words of the Gospel, may our sins be as nothing.

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible: and in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made: who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead: whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and giver of life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spake by the Prophets. And I believe One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

V. The Lord be with you.

R. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

The priest reads the Offertory sentence. The host is offered at the same time as the chalice.

Receive, O Holy Trinity, this offering which I, an unworthy sinner, offer in thine honour and in that of Blessed Mary and of all thy Saints, for my sins and offences, for the salvation of the living, and for the repose of all the faithful departed.

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, may this sacrifice be acceptable to almighty God.

Cleanse me, O Lord, from all defilement of soul and body, that I may be clean to fulfil the holy work of God.

In a humble spirit and a contrite heart, let us be accepted of thee, O Lord: and so let our sacrifice be in thy sight that it may be accepted by thee this day and be pleasing unto thee, O Lord my God.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

Pray for me, my brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to the Lord our God.

R. May the grace of the Holy Ghost enlighten your heart; and may the Lord accept meetly this sacrifice of praise from thy hands for our sins and offences.

The priest proceeds to read the Secret.

... Throughout all ages, world without end.

R. Amen.

V. The Lord be with you.

R. And with thy spirit.

V. Lift up your hearts.

R. We lift them up unto the Lord.

V. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God.

R. It is meet and right so to do.

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God. Through Christ our Lord.

Through whom the Angels praise thy majesty, the Dominations worship, the Powers tremble. The Heavens and the Virtues of the Heavens and the blessed Seraphim join together in celebrating their joy. With these, we pray thee, joining with them our voices, saying with lowly praise:

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Sabaoth; Heaven and earth are full of thy glory; Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.

PROPER PREFACES

Christmas

Everlasting God. For by the mystery of the Word made flesh, the light of thy glory hath shone anew upon the eyes of our spirit: that while we acknowledge him as God seen by men, we may be drawn by him to the love of things unseen.

And therefore with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominations, and with the whole host of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of thy glory, evermore praising thee and saying: Holy, holy, &c.

Epiphany

Everlasting God. For when thine only-begotten Son showed himself in the substance of our mortal nature, he restored us by the new light of his own immortality. And therefore.

Lent

Everlasting God. Who by fasting of the  body dost curb our vices, dost lift up our minds, dost give us strength and reward: Through Christ our Lord. Through whom.

Of the Holy Cross

Everlasting God. Who didst set the salvation of mankind upon the tree of the Cross, so that whence came death, thence also life might rise again: and he that overcame by the tree, on the tree also might be overcome: Through Christ our Lord. Through whom.

Easter

It is meet, right, and our bounden duty: that at all times, but more especially on this day (at this season) we should extol thy glory, when Christ our Passover was sacrificed. For he is the very Lamb who hath taken away the sins of the world; who by his death hath destroyed death, and to rising to life again hath restored to us everlasting life. And therefore.

Ascension

Everlasting God. Through Christ our Lord. who after his most glorious Resurrection manifestly appeared to all his Apostles, and in their sight ascended up into heaven, that he might make us partakers of his Godhead. And therefore.

Pentecost

Everlasting God, Through Christ our Lord. Who, going up above all the heavens and sitting at thy right hand, (on this day) sent forth the Holy Ghost, as he had promised, on the children of adoption. Wherefore does the whole world rejoice with exceeding great joy all the earth over. And both the heavenly Virtues and the angelic Powers also join in singing the hymn of thy glory, evermore praising thee and saying: Holy, holy, &c.

Holy Trinity

Everlasting God. Who with thine only-begotten Son and the Holy Ghost art one God, one Lord: not in the unity of a single person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For that which we believe from thy revelation concerning thy glory, that same we believe of thy Son, that same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, we shall adore distinction in persons, unity in being, and equality in majesty. Which Angels and Archangels, also the Cherubim and Seraphim do praise: day by day they cease not to cry out, with one voice saying: Holy, holy, &c.

Apostles

Everlasting God, humbly to pray thee, O Lord, the eternal Shepherd, to abandon not thy flock, but through thy blessed Apostles to keep a continual watch over it. That it may be governed by those same rulers, whom thou didst set over it as shepherds and as thy vicars. And therefore.

Our Lady

Everlasting God. And on the veneration of the blessed Mary ever a Virgin should praise and bless and proclaim thee. For she conceived thine only-begotten Son by the overshadowing of the Holy Ghost: and, losing not the glory of her virginity, gave forth to the world the everlasting light, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through whom.

CANON OF THE MASS

The crosses and rubrics, used in the rite, are not marked here - for the sake of simplicity. The proper Communicantes and Hanc igitur are exactly as in the Roman Rite.

Therefore, most gracious Father, through Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord, we humbly beseech thee and we desire that thou accept and bless these gifts, these presents, these holy and unspotted sacrifices, which first of all we offer unto thee for thy holy Catholic Church, that thou vouchsafe to pacify, keep, unite, and govern her throughout the whole world, with thy servant our Pope N, and our Bishop N, and all true believers, and such as have the Catholic and Apostolic faith in due estimation.

Remember, O Lord, thy servants and handmaids N and N, and all that stand hereby round about, whose faith and devotion unto thee is known and manifest; for whom we offer unto thee, or which themselves offer unto thee, this sacrifice of praise for them and theirs, for the redemption of their souls, for the hope of their salvation and health, and render their vows unto thee, the eternal, living, and true God.

Communicating and worshipping the memorial, first of the glorious and ever-Virgin Mary, the Mother of our God and Lord Jesus Christ, and also of thy blessed Apostles and Martyrs: Peter, Paul, Andrew, James, John, Thomas, James, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Simon and Thaddaeus, Linus, Cletus, Clement, Sixtus, Cornelius, Cyprian, Laurence, Chrysogonus, John and Paul, Cosmas and Damian, and of all thy Saints; by whose merits and prayers grant thou that in all things we may be defended with the help of thy protection, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Therefore, Lord, we beseech thee that thou, being pacified, wilt receive this oblation of our bounden service and of all thy household; and order our days in thy peace, and command us to be delivered from eternal damnation, and to be numbered in the flock of thine elect, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Which oblation we beseech thee, O almighty God, in all things to make blessed, appointed, ratified, reasonable and acceptable; that unto us it may be the Body and Blood of thy most dearly beloved Son our Lord Jesus Christ;

Who the day before he suffered, took bread into his holy and venerable hands, and with his eyes lifted up unto heaven, unto thee, God, his almighty Father, giving thanks unto thee, he blessed, brake, and gave to his disciples, saying: Take and eat ye all of this. For this is my Body.

Likewise after they had supped, taking also this excellent cup into his holy and venerable hands: also giving thanks unto thee, he blessed it, and gave it unto his disciples, saying: Take and drink ye all of this. For this is the Cup of my Blood, of the new and eternal testament: the Mystery of faith: which shall be shed for you and for many unto the remission of sins.

As oft as ye do these things, ye shall do them in remembrance of me.

Wherefore, O Lord, we also thy servants and thy holy people, being mindful as well of the blessed Passion and Resurrection from the dead as of the glorious Ascension unto the heavens of the same Christ, thy Son, our Lord God, do offer unto thine excellent majesty of thine own rewards and gifts, a pure host, a holy host, an undefiled host, the holy Bread of eternal life, and Cup of eternal salvation. Vouchsafe thou also with a merciful and pleasant countenance to have respect hereunto and to accept the same, as thou didst vouchsafe to accept the gifts of thy righteous servant Abel, and the sacrifice of our patriarch Abraham, and the holy sacrifice, the undefiled host, that thy high priest Melchiesedech did offer unto thee.

We humbly beseech thee, O almighty God, command thou these to be brought by the hands of thy holy Angel unto thy high altar in the presence of thy Divine Majesty, that as many of us as of this participation of the altar shall receive the holy Body and Blood of thy Son, may be replenished with all heavenly benediction and grace, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Remember, O Lord, also the souls of thy servants and handmaidens N and N, who are gone before us with the mark of faith, and rest in the sleep of peace. We beseech thee, O Lord, that unto them and unto all such as rest in Christ thou Frilt Erant a place of repose, of light and of peace, througb the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Vouchsafe to give also unto us sinners, hoping of the multitude of thy mercies, some portion and fellowship with thy holy Apostles and Martyrs; with John, Stephen, Matthias, Barnabas, Ignatius, Alexander, Marcellinus, Peter, Felicitas, Perpetua, Agatha, Lucia, Agnes, Cecilia, Anastasia, and with all thy Saints; within whose fellowship, we beseech thee admit us, not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offences, through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, O Lord, all these good things thou dost ever create, thou dost sanctify, quicken, bless and give unto us.

Through him, with him and in him is unto thee, God, Father almighty, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

Let us pray.

As our Saviour hath taught and commanded us, we are bold to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation.

R. But deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Deliver us, O Lord, we beseech thee, from all evils, past, present, and to come: and at the intercession of the blessed ever Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with thy blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and with Andrew, and all the Saints, graciously grant us peace in all our days: that by the help of thine availing mercy we may ever both be free from sin and safe from all distress. Through the same Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.

R. Amen.

V. The peace of the Lord be always with you.

R. And with thy spirit.

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.

May this holy mingling of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ be unto me, and to all who receive it, salvation of spirit and body, a wholesome preparation for eternal life, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lord, Holy Father, almighty and eternal God, grant me so worthily to take this holy Body and Blood of thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ, that by this I may merit to receive forgiveness of all my sins, and be replenished with thy Holy Spirit, and to have thy peace; for thou art God alone, neither is there any other without thee, whose glorious kingdom and empire endureth without end, world without end. Amen.

Peace be unto thee and to the Church of God.

R. And with thy spirit.

Priest’s Communion prayers

God our Father, fount and origin of all goodness, who being moved by tender mercy, hast willed thine only-begotten Son for our sake to descend into the lower parts of the world and to take flesh, whom I unworthily hold in my hands.

I worship thee, I glorify thee, I praise thee with all intention of mind and heart; and I beseech thee that thou fail not us thy servants, but forgive our sins, so as with pure heart and chaste body we may be able to serve thee, the one living and true God, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, who by the will of the Father, and the co-operation of the Holy Ghost, hast through thy death given life unto the world: deliver me by this thy most sacred Body and Blood from all mine iniquities, and from every evil: and make me ever to cleave unto thy commandments, and suffer me never to be separated from thee, thou Saviour of the world: Who with God the Father and the same Holy Ghost livest and reignest, ever one God, world without end. Amen,

O Lord Jesus Christ  let not the Sacrament of thy Body and Blood which ;receive, though unworthy, be to my judgement and condemnation, but through thy goodness let it avail to the salvation of my body and soul. Amen.

Hail for evermore, thou most holy flesh of Christ, unto me before all things and above all things the highest sweetness. The Body of our Lord Jesus Christ be unto me, a sinner, the way and life, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Communion with the Host

Hail for evermore, thou heavenly drink, unto me before all things and above all things the highest sweetness. The Body and Blood of Christ avail unto me, a sinner, for an everlasting healing unto life eternal. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Communion from the Chalice with the particle of the Host

After Communion thankgiving

I give thanks unto thee, O Lord holy Father, almighty and eternal God, who hast refreshed me of the most holy Body and Blood of thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ; and I beseech thee that this Sacrament of our salvation which I, an unworthy sinner, have received, come not to my judgement and condemnation according to my merits; but to the profit of my body and unto the salvation of my soul unto life eternal. Amen.

Ablutions

Grant, O Lord, that what we have taken with our mouth, we may receive with a pure mind, and that from a temporal gift it may become for us an everlasting remedy.

Let this communion, O Lord, purge us from sin, and make us partakers of this heavenly remedy.

Let us worship the sign of the Cross, whereby we have received the Sacrament of salvation.

The priest now reads the Communion.

V. The Lord be with you.

R. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

Postcommunion.

V. The Lord be with you.

R. And with thy spirit.

Ite, Missa est. or The Mass is ended, depart in peace.

R. Thanks be to God.

May the office of my bounden duty be pleasing unto thee, O holy Trinity, and grant that this sacrifice which I, an unworthy sinner, have offered in the sight of thy Majesty, may be acceptable unto thee; and win forgiveness from thy mercy for me and for all those for whom I have offered it. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The priest signs himself if there are no people present.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost

When there is a congregation, the Blessing is given:

The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst you, and remain with you always.  Amen.

The priest says the Last Gospel from memory on his way back to the sacristy.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light. That was the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his Name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
