this icon, Sts. Peter and Paul flank the crucified
Lord. In the centre beneath the Cross are the holy martyrs of Chertsey
abbey in Surrey. The front two Saints in this group are St. Beocca
(left) and St. Ethor (right). On the left, from top to bottom,
are St. Augulus, 1st bishop of London; St. Dunstan,
archbishop of Canterbury (+ 988); St. Mellitus, archbishop of
Canterbury (+ 624); and St. Alban martyr (+ ca. 305). On the
right, from top to bottom, are St. Aelphege, archbishop and
martyr of Canterbury (+ 1012); St. Erkenwald, abbot of Chertsey
and bishop of London (+ 693); St. Wulsin, abbot of Westminster
and bishop of Sherborne (+ 1002); and St. Sebbi, king of the
East Angles and hermit of London (+ ca. 694). Across the front, from
left to right, are St. Hildelitha, nun of Barking monastery (+
712); St. Ethelburga, abbess of Faremoutier in France, princess
of the East Angles (+ 664); St. Wulfhilda, abbess and
prophetess of Barking (+ 1000); and St. Theoritgitha (or
Tortgith) (+ 700), novice-mistress of Barking under St. Ethelburga.
