Icons of
St. Alphege of Canterbury, Archbishop & Martyr
St. Alphege
flourished in the first few years of the 11th c. as Archbishop of
Canterbury and Primate of All England. He was captured by the Danes in
their invasion of England, and after he refused to allow a
devastatingly-high ransom to be paid in order to free him, and also
refused to renounce Christianity, was put to death on April 19,
1012.
