Icons of St. Arsenius of Old
Rome, abba of Scetis in the Egyptian desert.
Feast:
July 19
As Deacon of the Church of
Old Rome, St. Arsenius was appointed tutor to the sons of Emperor
Theodosius the Great, for which purpose he relocated to New Rome. About
395 he left the capital to live with the monks of Alexandria. After the
emperor's death, he retired to the wilderness of Scetis, became a
disciple of St. John the Short, and lived in the greatest austerity and
reclusiveness, reposing at Troë about 450 AD.
