Icon of St. Florentius II, bishop

Back to WESTERN SAINTS ICONS

Icon of St. Florentius II, Bishop of Strasbourg.

Feast: Nov. 7

An Irish Priest, St. Florentius went to Alsace and became a hermit at the foot of Mt. Ringelburg, in the wilds of Haselac. He cured the blind and mute daughter of king Dagobert, who in gratitude helped him found a monastery at nearby Haslach. He was made Bishop of Strasbourg about 678, brought Irish monks into his see, and built a house for them, which developed into the Monastery of St. Thomas.

Icon from the workshop of the Brotherhood of the Holy Trinity in France.
