Icons of St. Fulgentius,
Bishop of Ruspe in Africa
Feast: Jan. 1
Of a noble Carthaginian
family, St. Fulgentius was well known as a monastic abba, before he was
appointed bishop of Ruspe (modern Kudiat Rosfa, in Tunisia, Africa) in
508. He began a monastery there in which to continue in his very
ascetic life, but the anti-Orthodox king Thrasimund decreed the
banishment of the community. In these straits he was helped by Pope St.
Symmachus of Rome. He then founded a monastery at Cagliari. Eventually
the King allowed the saint to return to Carthage, but complaints from
Arian bishops caused him to be exiled once more. Holy Father
Fulgentius, pray to God for us!
