Icon of St. Gerard, abbot

Back to WESTERN SAINTS ICONS

Icon of Our Holy Father Gerard, Abbot-Founder of Brogne

Feast: Oct. 3

Holy Gerard enjoyed a promising career at the court of the Count of Namur, but decided to embrace the angelic life. Finding the monasteries of Belgium too lax, in 917 he came to France and became a monk at St. Denis, helping to transform this community into one of the most exemplary in Europe. He eventually was ordained to the holy priesthood and founded and guided the Abbey of Brogne in Belgium. He reposed on Oct. 3, 959. Holy Gerard, Father of Monastics, pray to God for us!

Icon by the hand of Aidan Hart, one of the most famed iconographers of Western Saints today. The icon is a thumbnail; click on the image to see greater detail. Many thanks to the servant of God Aidan, for having made us aware of these newly available and sublime icons.

A note on the icon graphics we host on this site, including the above icon:
St. John Cassian Press does not "carry," i.e., reproduce, sell, or stock these icons. Those who wish to acquire icons should contact the icon's producer / distributor, if shown; otherwise, an icon maker or distributor should be contacted (a cursory list appears on the main Icons page).
