Icons of St. Hosius the Confessor

Back to WESTERN SAINTS ICONS

In the above synaxical icon of Hispanic Saints, St. Hosius (Osius) appears in the back row of male Saints, being the third from the left, flanked by James the apostle (l. of him) and St. Leander of Sevilla (rt. of him). Leftmost in that row is St. Isidore of Sevilla. The female Saints in the front row are, from l. to rt.: martyr Justa, martyr Eulalia, martyr Rufina.

Icon of St. Hosius (Osios) the Confessor, Bishop of Córdoba (Cordova) in Spain.

Feast: Aug. 27

St. Hosius the Confessor was bishop for more than 60 years in the city of Cordova in Spain, during the 4th century. St. Constantine the Great revered him and made him a privy counsellor. The saint advised the emperor to summon the First Oecumenical Council at Nicaea in 325, and was the first bishop to sign the acta of this Council. After the death of emperor Constantine, St. Hosius defended St. Athanasius of Alexandria against the Arianising emperor Constantius, and for this was imprisoned in Sirmium far from Spain. After returning to Cordova, St. Hosius reposed in Christ in the year 359. Holy Father Hosius, pray to God for us! (information from the OCA website)
