Icon of St. Hosius (Osios) the
Confessor, Bishop of Córdoba (Cordova) in Spain.
Feast: Aug. 27
St. Hosius the Confessor was
bishop for more than 60 years in the city of Cordova in Spain, during
the 4th century. St. Constantine the Great revered him and made him a
privy counsellor. The saint advised the emperor to summon the First
Oecumenical Council at Nicaea in 325, and was the first bishop to sign
the acta of this Council. After the death of emperor Constantine, St.
Hosius defended St. Athanasius of Alexandria against the Arianising
emperor Constantius, and for this was imprisoned in Sirmium far from
Spain. After returning to Cordova, St. Hosius reposed in Christ in the
