Icon of St. John the Evangelist

Back to WESTERN SAINTS ICONS

Icon of St. John the Evangelist and St. Bede the Venerable of Wearmouth and Jarrow

(St. John is at the upper left and St. Bede towards the lower right)

Feast of St. Bede: May 26
Feast of St. John: Sept. 26 and May 8 (in Eastern rite); in Western rite, Dec. 27 (repose), Jan. 3 (octave-day), and May 6 (miracle at the Latin Gate)

This illustration is from a 12th-century manuscript from Austria. The juxtaposition of Sts. John and Bede in this illumination may be due to the well-known fact that St. Bede reposed while finishing a translation of the Gospel of John into Anglo-Saxon.

Old English liturgical books contain the following collect for the service on the feast of St. Bede the Venerable: "By the intercession of Thy blessed confessor Bede, fill us with joy, O Lord our God, for Thou hast granted us to progress by his fatherly teaching, and to rejoice in his blessed, solemn feast. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the communion of the Holy Spirit, God through all the ages of ages. Amen."

From the complete Old Sarum Rite Missal, (c) 1998 St. Hilarion Press
