Icon of St. Keby (also known
as Cybi or Kebbi), Bishop in Cornwall, with St. Seiriol of Wales (St.
Keby is on the left)
Feast: Nov. 8
Keby was the son of the
warrior-chieftain Solomon. Raised as a Christian, he went on a
pilgrimage to Rome and Jerusalem at an early age. He was ordained
priest and consecrated bishop. Arriving home he found his father was
dead and he was King of Cornwall. St. Keby declined to assume the
throne and instead travelled throughout the kingdom, preaching and
building churches at Duloe, Tregony, Cubert, and Landulph. Moving on to
south Wales, he founded churches at Llangybi-ar-Wysg, and
Llanddyfrwyr-yn-Edeligion. He spent some time in Irelnad, but returned
to Wales, heading north and settling at Llangybi on the Llyn peninsula.
He was given the old Roman fort at Holyhead, where he founded a large
and important monastery. St. Keby was a friend of St. Seiriol. Gaining
a tanned complexion on his many journeys, he earned the nickname Cybi
Felyn (Keby the Tanned). On Nov. 8, 555, the Saint reposed in Christ.
He was buried at Capel y Bedd (the Chapel of the Grave) next to his
monastery at Holyhead. Holy Father Keby, pray to God for us!
