Icon of St. Maternus, Bishop
of Cologne (Köln), who is shown on the right, and St. Amandus of
Maastricht in Holland (who appears on the left).
Feast: Sept. 14
According to tradition, St.
Maternus of Cologne is the same as the son of the widow of Naim, whom
Our Saviour Jesus raised to life from the dead. He was sent to Gaul by
St. Peter the Apostle. He was Bishop of Cologne and may also have been
Bishop of Trier.
Top Icon: by the hand of
Protodeacon Paul of Belgium.
Lower Icon: a mosaic from the
Chapel of Larmes, Mont-Sainte Odile, a 12th c. church. The fresco
appears to be 20th c., however.
