Icon of St. Nazarius, Martyr
of Milan
Feast: Oct. 14
St. Nazarius was born in Rome,
the son of a pagan Roman army officer and a Christian mother. He was
taught by the Apostle Peter himself. He went to Milan, where he
courageously preached the faith of Christ. There, with his young
disciple Celsus (the child in the above icon) he was arrested under the
persecution of Nero and martyred. St. Ambrose of Milan discovered the
relics of Sts. Celsus & Nazarius soon after 395, and the blood of
St. Nazarius was still liquid and red. Then the most-holy relics were
enshrined appropriately. Holy Martyr Nazarius, pray to God for us!
Icon is of unknown provenance,
with Greek inscriptions. St. Nazarius is the 2nd saint from the left,
an older man of uncovered head and flowing beard, in a robe of blue and
an over-cloak of purble-black. He holds a scroll in his hand to denote
his work of teaching.
