Icon of St. Paschal I, Pope of
Old Rome
Feast: Feb.
11
St. Paschal
was Abbot of the Monastery of St. Stephen in Rome, which housed many
pilgrims to the City. He attempted to bring the iconoclast Emperor Leo
V to his senses, encouraged many of the most prominent iconodules by
his epistles, built and beautified many churches in Rome, and caused
many of the relics of Saints which had rested in the catacombs to be
brought into places of honour in the churches of the City. Holy Father
Paschal, pray to God for us!
Top Icon:
from an old Western mosaic. St. Paschal is the saint farthest to the
left. His square halo indicates that he was yet alive when the mosaic
was executed, and in fact the mosaic dates from the year 821, whereas
St. Paschal reposed in 824.
Lower
Icon: another mosaic, from St. Mary in Domnica, Rome. St. Paschal is
kneeling at the feet of the Holy Virgin, and again he has a square
halo.
