Icon of St. Paul Aurelian,
Bishop, of S.-Pol in Brittany
Feast: Mar. 12
St. Paul Aurelian was born in
Wales and studied at Ynys Byr monastic school under St. Illtyd. At the
age of 16, he was blessed to live as a hermit. In time he was ordained,
gained 12 disciples, and was invited by a King Mark to evangelise. He
then moved to Brittany, where he built a monastery. Against his
objections, he was named a Bishop by King Childebert. He was known for
working stupendous miracles. Holy Father Paul Aurelian, pray to God for
us!
Top Icon is of unknown
provenance, but probably by the atelier of St. John Damascene in
France. Icon shown at la-france-orthodoxe.net
Bottom Icon is by the hand of
iconographer Agnes Glichitch.
Underneath the Icons is shown the stole of St. Paul Arelian, which is
preserved in the church of the Batz island (France). It is an Oriental
piece of the 8th century. The design is of two hunters riding horses
and facing each other. The colours are blue, white, yellow and brown.
