Icons of St. Peter the Aleut,
Martyr of California
Feast: Sept. 24
Born in Alaska, St. Peter was a convert to
the Orthodox Faith. In 1815, when he was still a youth, his trading
party was held hostage in San Francisco, California. There St. Peter
was tortured and slain by Franciscan friars for refusing to convert to
Roman Catholicism from the Orthodox Catholic Faith. They cut off his
fingers and toes one by one until he bled to death. He was the first
native-born North American saint of the Church. Holy Martyr Peter, pray
to God for us!
