Icon of St. Peter Urseolus,
Doge of Venice, Hermit
Feast: Jan. 10
St. Peter was named commander
of the Venetian fleet when he was 20 years old, and became Doge of
Venice in 976. After ruling capably and successfully for two years, he
vanished. It turns out that the powerful ruler had fled to the
monastery at Cuxa in France. He led a life of great asceticism and upon
the advice of St. Romuald entered upon the path of eremitical solitude
and struggle. Holy Father Peter, pray to God for us!
Icon is from an ancient
fresco, of unknown location.
