Icon of St. Protasius, martyr

Back to WESTERN SAINTS ICONS

Icon of St. Protasius, one of the Protomartyrs of Milan

Feast: Oct. 14

Sts. Gervasius and Protasius, the sons of the martyrs Vitalis and Valeria, are venerated as the protomartyrs of Milan. St. Gervasius was beaten to death with a lead-tipped whip, and St. Protasius was beheaded. Guided by a vision of the martyrs, St. Ambrose of Milan unearthed their sacred relics and they are venerated in the West upon June 19. Holy Martyr Protasius, pray to God for us!

Top Icon: mosaic from the ancient basilica of St. Vitalis at Ravenna.

Lower Icon is by an unknown hand, with Greek inscriptions. St. Protasius is the third saint from the left, with a dark blue cloak, holding a cross which tilts to the left, over a gold-edged white tunic.
